Saturday… the last week of 48…
Didn’t do a heck of a lot today. Cleaning up as usual. Sometimes, I sound like a broken record. Sometimes, I FEEL like a broken record… lol…
A couple of friends of mine from Canada, have been in Taiwan for the past week. They spent a couple of days in Taipei, three or four days in Taichung (and for the life of me, I don’t know why…), what was supposed to be two days in Tainan, then off to Kaohsiung for a day before heading to Hong Kong and Macao.
Now, I have traveled around Taiwan quite a bit in my 10 years here. I have been all the cities mentioned above. Now, I must admit that I haven’t really spent a lot of time in Taichung. A few days here and there over the years. Usually just a day and back to Tainan. Taichung is about 2 hours by bus or regular train, so it is not a big deal to visit.
When my friends got here on Saturday (they were supposed to be here on Friday), I asked them why? Why four days in Taichung? Why not four days in Taipei, and one day in Taichung. They just liked the city. Well, maybe there’s something there that I haven’t noticed on previous trips. Maybe there’s something secret that I haven’t been told about. Good thing I do know a few people who live in Taichung. Maybe I can get some information out of them.
Nonetheless, I had spent the last four or five days cleaning my home. All those household chores that I usually save for the weekend. I spread it out until Friday, in anticipation of their arrival – only to find out that they weren’t arriving until today. Okay, well that gives me a few hours to tackle a couple of little things that were left.
Well, if they didn’t get into Tainan until around 2pm! I had had the extra room set up for them, I told the cats to be on their best behaviour and no fighting or growling, the garbage all taken out, floors mopped, laundry done, and even my office straightened out. God, I hate housework!
They got to the house. I took them around to a few places, went and had lunch, and that was when they told me that they were going to Kaohsiung this evening, because their flight to Hong Kong was early on Sunday.
Now, I enjoy having visitors. I don’t know a lot of people in Taiwan, and most of these people live in Tainan, so of course, I don’t get much of an opportunity to play host.
To say the least, I was a bit upset. Being the ‘diplomat’ that I am (yeah, right), I did keep my resentment of this fact to myself. I had cancelled my class for Saturday night, so I could take them out. Also, it would have given ME a chance to see a bit of nightlife, since I don’t get that opportunity often.
Nonetheless, we took a taxi back to the train station around 7pm, and off they went.
Now, don’t get me wrong. It was nice to see people from Canada. It was nice spending a bit of time with people who speak fluent English. It was nice to be able to share a bit of where I live, with them. I only wish that it had not been squeezed into 5 hours!
I realize that they only had a few days (well, 3 weeks actually) of holidays, and that they really wanted to hit the casinos in Macao. Perhaps next time, if there be a next time, they will spend less time in Taichung, and more time with me.
On the positive side though, my house is sparkling clean – for now!
That’s it, that’s all… for now!
